In the novel, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontà «, the main themes help the reader discover a deeper understanding of the novel as a whole. One of the first important themes of this novel is love. Love plays an immense role throughout the plot, in a nontraditional way. In the beginning of the novel, we notice the growing relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine, and how they become inseparable. No matter what they are doing, they are almost certainly together. However, after their separation from each other, their relationship becomes much more strained. Heathcliff and Catherine do not speak like they are used to, and Heathcliff ignores as much interaction with others as he can. Heathcliff wants to earn vengeance on Hindley, because of all the abuse and hardships he had put him through, and the wrong he had suffered in his hands. Hindley had denied Heathcliff an education, and made him a servant in the home he grew up in. Hindley’s motive is jealousy, based off of how his father had loved Heathcliff and treated him exceedingly higher when he was still alive. Heathcliff says, â€Å"I’m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. I don’t care how long I wait, if I can only do it, at last. I hope he will not die before I do!† (53). That's the last the widow bird ever sees of her offspring. But not to worry, because the Estrildid finch will take devoted care of the abandoned birds as if they were her own. And who's to tell the difference? Though adult widow birds and Estrildid finches don't look at all alike, their eggs do. Not only that, baby widow birds are dead ringers for Estrildid finch chicks, both having the same colouration and markings. They even act and sound the same, thus ensuring that the widow bird nestlings can grow up among their alien nestmates with no risk of being rejected by their foster parents. MASTERS OF DISGUISE Things aren't always as they seem, and nowhere is this more true than in nature, where dozens of animals (and plants) spend their time masquerading as others. So clever are their disguises that you've probably never known you were being fooled by spiders impersonating ants, squirrels that look like shrews, worms copying sea anemones, and roaches imitating ladybugs. There are even animals that look like themselves, which can also be a form of impersonation. The phenomenon of mimicry, as it's called by biologists, was first noted in the mid-1800s by an English naturalist, Henry W. Bates. Watching butterflies in the forests of Brazil, Bates discovered that many members of the Peridae butterfly family did not look anything like their closest relatives. Instead they bore a striking resemblance to members of the Heliconiidae butterfly family. Upon closer inspection, Bates found that there was a major advantage in mimicking the Heliconiids. Fragile, slow-moving and brightly coloured, the Heliconiids are ideal targets for insectivorous birds. Yet, birds never touch them because they taste so bad. Imagine that you're a delicious morsel of butterfly. Wouldn't it be smart to mimic the appearance of an unpalatable Heliconiid so that no bird would bother you either? That's what Bates concluded was happening in the Brazilian jungle among the Pieridae. Today, the imitation of an inedible species by an edible one is called Batesian mimicry. Since Bates' time, scientists have unmasked hundreds of cases of mimicry in nature. It hasn't always been an easy job, either, as when an animal mimics not one, but several other species. In one species of butterfly common in India and Sri Lanka, the female appears in no less than three versions. One type resembles the male while the others resemble two entirely different species of inedible butterflies. Butterflies don't "choose" to mimic other butterflies in the same way that you might pick out a costume for a masquerade ball. True, some animals, such as the chameleon, do possess the ability to change body colour and blend in the with their surroundings. But most mimicry arises through evolutionary change. A mutant appears with characteristics similar to that of a better protected animal. This extra protection offers the mutant the opportunity to reproduce unharmed, and eventually flourish alongside the original. In the world of mimics, the ant is another frequently copied animal, though not so much by other ants as by other insects and even spiders. Stoop down to inspect an ant colony, and chances are you'll find a few interlopers that aren't really ants at all but copycat spiders (or wasps or flies). This particular scene caught my attention because the English were always the rivals of the Germans. Though von Bohm considered the comment of the housekeeper as a complement, the director of the film gave a meaning to such as being more of a bad thing being English. It was later confirmed by Lola that being the fact that von Bohm wore a different shirt was considered fake and corrupt. My guess is that the director had those same opinions about the English. For the props, the film was very detailed with every single prop in the set. Lola’s room for one was filled with materials one would expect from a prostitute’s room in the 1950s. The detail was highlighted by dolls Lola had in her room which she was very fond of. There were more red lights in the whorehouse, a sign that evil things were done in the place. The actors were well picked as they all fitted the temperament and likings of their characters. Each portrayed their parts well as they brought their characters to life on screen. Lola was portrayed as a beautiful blonde bombshell. She is irritable to any man who meets her. Schuckert who is the corrupt but wealthy building contractor was a chubby man with a bearded. The actor gave justice to his part as he was indeed portrayed to be evil and corrupt. A well liked man for the wrong reason. Lastly von Bohm being described as a man in his 40s with principle was pla yed well as he had grey receding hair but has a face of a man of principle and respect. All actors fitted well in their given parts and I’m glad to say that I myself was satisfied with the casting. Performance The director has planned the film well as the results were impressive. The organized set design and lighting together with the costumes which brought the actors to light, Fassbinder was able to capture the situation of West Germany during the economic miracle period. The performances of the actors were believable and it captivated the hearts of the audience. In the end everything became very realistic. The ending was not very fictional but depicted the real life ending most people go through in their lives. One particular scene perhaps captured my attention, the scene where von Bohm discovered that the subject of his affection, Lola, was a prostitute. I found this particular scene funny as the man fled due to despair and shock upon finding out that Lola was a singer/ pr ostitute, worse a private whore of his enemy, Schuckert. I honestly found the acting of the actor overly dramatic as he bolted out of the whorehouse. I was expecting more of a silent shock and a cold and chilly departure due to anger and despair. Everyone’s performance was quite believable and impressive except for the actor who played van Bohm. His initial portrayal of his character was good but as he became obsessed with Lola I found him to be quite overly reactive and sensitive which does not suite his aura at all. It was awkward but then when I really think about it maybe it is his way of showing how love blinds a man (Jones). The most impressive actors I would say were the ones who played Lola and Schuckert as they portrayed believable characters who are human at indeed as they also became emotional but managed to keep their cunning and corrupt sides intact. The performances of the characters were unique in a sense that everyone made their characters distinct which gave recall and instilled fondness among the audience. Another interesting character was the secretary of von Bohm who brought comical senses in the serious film with her whimsy behaviors. Editing The way the film was edited was very good. Each scene ended with a diming background and music but I found it quite unusual for it cuts the audience’s line of thought. It is a bit different from the usual movies I have seen in cinemas and at home. Lola is a unique film. One of its unique features is its editing element where the director, producers and the crew made sure that the film organized the thoughts of its audience upon seeing it. It was like reading chapters of a book where each topic is segregated and separated. Issues were tackled one by one and as the plot deepens it was so easy for the audience to detect what changed in the sequence. Te film was edited in a unique way indeed and also in a sense very dramatic as the director cuts the tension of scenes and leaves the audience in awe and desperation to know what would come next. Instead of merely marking each passing day off on your calendar, make the countdown fun and give everyone something unique to look forward to! Whats the ABC Countdown? The ABC Countdown is something that teachers put together so that something cool and exciting happens each day to count down to summer. When there are 26 days left in school, assign each day a letter of the alphabet. For example, the 26th day is A, the 25th day is B, and so on, all the way down to the last day of school which is Z. Have Fun With It There are fewer than 26 school days left in your year, consider spelling out a shorter word, such as the school name, mascot, or even just the word Summer. It doesnt matter so much how long the countdown is, just have fun with it. Examples You Can Use Next, its time to get creative!
